Seguro que has escuchado muchas veces la palabra “vintage”, pero no tantas veces asociada a la decoración de tu habitación o vivienda.
Decorating a room in a vintage style is very trendy, and many interior designers—and even interior design influencers—mention it every day.
Keep reading, and we’ll give you a few ideas for decorating your home in a vintage style.
What is “Vintage”?
The word “vintage” does not appear in the RAE’s dictionary of terms, but it is included in other dictionaries, where it is defined as something that “is not new, but whose design is in style.” It means classic, retro, or period-specific—belonging to a bygone era—and, despite being old, it is still in use today.
This term can be used to refer to various types of objects, accessories, clothing, and even home decor.
What about vintage decor?
As we’ve already mentioned, vintage decor is extremely popular, and many people decorate their homes with antique furniture and motifs, since it allows them to reuse well-preserved objects that hold special value, while also adding a unique and original touch that blends the modern with the antique.
This style of interior design does not always feature special furniture, but it is common for those who adopt it to have collectible or exclusive, high-end pieces.

What kinds of materials do we find?
The vintage style doesn’t refer to any specific era; rather , it’s about combining elements from different time periods that remind us of the past.
Among the most notable pieces of furniture—and those we first associate with the vintage style—are those made of wood, especially dark-colored wood; although they don’t necessarily have to be made of this material.
It’s true that pieces made of dark-colored wood are generally of good quality and stand out immediately from the low-cost furniture we see every day.
How can I give my room a vintage look?
When decorating a room, the most important thing is that the decor doesn’t clash with the style of the rest of your home and that it also allows you to relax and creates a sense of calm.
Brighten up your room with a chandelier because, even though it reminds us of the decor in our grandparents’ homes, they’re still in use today. If you think this is too classic, you can find more modern designs that incorporate wooden planks, wires, ropes, etc., and that have a historical feel.
Use a wicker or tufted headboard, typical of the 1950s and still very much in style. Also, if you don’t mind spending a little extra time arranging them, place several pillows on top of the bed.
At the foot of your bed, if you have room, you can add a weathered wooden trunk to store your pillows at night, blankets, or even clothes you don’t wear every day.
To complete the decor, you can add a chair made of natural cane and wood. Although in recent years, wicker and rattan have become popular choices, and they also work well for decorating your patio.

Sometimes we might confuse vintage decor with retro decor, but there’s a fine line between the two.
Retro decor aims to imitate or evoke an old-fashioned style; in other words, it is a contemporary creation.
Vintage decor, on the other hand , belongs to the past—that is, it was created and designed in earlier times, but is still in good condition. That’s why we mentioned earlier that some people who own this type of decor have genuine heirlooms.
