But don’t worry—at Culmia, we’re here to help. In this article, we’ve put together 10 ideas to help you decorate the rooms in your home in an easy and practical way. Will you join us?

Before you begin, consider all aspects of your stay

First, keep in mind factors such as size, orientation, lighting, and the type of room. All of these are crucial for successful decorating! So, if you have a clear understanding of them, you’ll be able to make better decisions and are sure to achieve the best results.

Choose your style and don’t be afraid to embrace it

How do you want to decorate your rooms? You have a wide range of options, from classic to Scandinavian, including Mediterranean, ethnic, and industrial styles…In fact, one option is to decorate your entire home in a well-defined style to ensure that nothing clashes and to clearly reflect your tastes.

Or if you like to be creative and add an even more personal touch, you can also mix and match styles. To do this, we recommend applying the 80/20 rule. In other words, decorate 80% of the space in a primary style and the remaining 20% in a seasonal style or one that complements it well.

Remember the importance of color

Any good interior design requires the right choice and combination of colors. So, to keep from getting lost along the way, you can use the 60/30/10 rule. This rule recommends using the primary color in 60% of the room, the secondary color in 30%, and a tertiary color for the remaining 10%.

Why? Interior designers recommend not to use more than three colors, though they allow for a fourth if it’s a neutral. This helps avoid a sense of visual overload and chromatic chaos, while also making it easier to combine colors according to our preferences: using complementary, monochromatic, or consecutive colors.

Use textures to bring your rooms to life

Textures have the power to communicate even more than colors, because you can almost feel and touch them. So use them to convey sensations and emotions, and don’t be afraid to bring your ideas to life.

What’s more, in this case, you can combine them to enhance the result, but do so in moderation. Keep in mind that they’ll help ensure your home isn’t a boring place, but at the same time, they could become “overwhelming” if they convey too much movement and energy. That’s why you should always strive for balance and contrast, mixing rough textures with soft ones.

Minimalism will be your guide as you focus on what’s useful

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the more furniture and objects you have, the better your room will look. Don’t clutter the space; stick to what you need and choose furniture that’s functional.

To do this, think about what you want to highlight and focus your decor on that, so that everything around it complements it rather than overshadowing it. Create focal points to make them the stars of the room, and use the space effectively so that there aren’t areas that are overly decorated and others that are practically empty.

Arrange the furniture and objects in a balanced way

In line with what we just said, take a general look at the room and arrange everything so that the visual balance is even. This is a task in which you’ll also need to carefully consider the characteristics of the furniture and objects in the room: color, shape, texture…

Here are two options: formal or symmetrical balance, in which you arrange everything symmetrically using objects with similar characteristics and dimensions (as in a mirror); and informal or asymmetrical balance, in which the visual balance is achieved using different objects—to convey a greater sense of relaxation.

Group objects with similar characteristics

Arrange objects that are similar in style, color, texture, and function— especially if they’re small—in the same spaces. This will help convey a sense of order and will also be extremely useful. After all, we mustn’t forget that we don’t just want to decorate the room properly—we also want it to be as livable and comfortable as possible.

Try to always have good lighting

Lighting is a key factor in interior design. You can choose the perfect colors or combine textures flawlessly, but if the room isn’t lit properly, it will be very difficult to appreciate the result.

Use light, pale-colored curtains to let natural light in. Position artificial lighting strategically. You’ll always need general lighting to make the room livable; however, you can also add other types of lighting as needed: task lighting to illuminate specific areas, such as a study desk; ambient lighting to provide softer light as an alternative to general lighting; and accent lighting to highlight specific objects or areas.

Install carpets

They’re cozy, create a sense of comfort, and help dampen noise. Plus, they’re great for the colder months; during the warmer months, you can opt for thinner, lighter fabrics. Not to mention that they help prevent bumps and slips… They offer numerous benefits and can end up becoming a central feature of your room’s decor, so we encourage you to give them a try.

Try to hide the ugliest or least attractive elements

The radiator, the router, the cables, a pillar… these are elements that can ruin the overall look, so try to be creative in hiding or covering them up. For example, you can decorate them or hide them in boxes and then decorate the boxes appropriately.

Here are our ten simple tips to make decorating the rooms in your home a breeze. So don’t hesitate—put them into practice and give your life a fresh new look!
