Fortunately, that’s no longer the case, and now the trend is not only to decorate kitchens but also to give them a particularly modern touch that reflects the owners’ personalities. That’s something we at Culmia want to help you with—we’ve compiled several modern kitchen design ideas that will help you give yours a contemporary, stylish look.

Things to Consider When Decorating Modern Kitchens

If you want to give your kitchen a modern look, you can make changes to specific areas or sections:

Soil Type

Kitchen floors require special consideration. Because of the activities we do in them, they need to be impact- and scratch-resistant, easy to clean, non-slip, and so on. Therefore, we should evaluate these characteristics when making our choice, rather than being guided solely by aesthetics.

Type of cuisine

As you probably know, there are different types of kitchens. The main ones are the open kitchen —American-style— and the closed kitchen, depending on whether they’re open to or integrated with another room in the home —such asthe living room—or whether they’re properly separated by partitions. However, there are also other factors that will affect your decorating plans, such as the presence of a breakfast bar or an “island” table in the center.

Kitchen Finishes

The materials and furniture that make up the kitchen must be properly coated. These are what we traditionally refer to as finishes, which will provide strength and durability to the room.

Here, too, it’s just as important to choose finishes that are eye-catching and attractive as it is to choose ones that are functional and compact. And when it comes time to make a decision, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from: tiles, marble, wood, stainless steel, glass, and granite are some of the most popular choices you’ll find in the catalogs.

Colors

Decor is inconceivable without color, so the kitchen also calls for us to make important decisions in this part of the house. Keep in mind, however, that since this is a space with very specific functions, not just any choice will do when it comes to selecting the color of the walls, floor, and furniture.

Decorating Tips for Modern Kitchens

Affordable and understated furniture

The kitchen is a space where we should feel comfortable, because we’ll be moving back and forth, and we’ll need quick access to the items or ingredients required to create our dishes. Besides, modern doesn’t always mean complicated; so don’t worry if you opt for a simple, functional space—you’ll still be able to achieve great results.

As a result, look for practical furniture that is simple in both appearance and use. And at the same time, it should allow you to store all the kitchen items you’ll need to use and put away practically every day: plates, glasses, pans and pots, containers of ingredients and seasonings, cooking utensils, etc.

Stylish Appliances

Technology offers us many benefits in the kitchen, because it can help us cook faster and achieve tasty and nutritious results. With this in mind, when selecting the right appliances —such as a stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, or refrigerator— we can consider not only their quality but also their style.

And don’t forget that there are many ways to achieve this look, such as through modern and metallic designs, by integrating it with your furniture, or even by going for a retro style, since the vintage aesthetic of the 1950s is very much in fashion right now.

Black or white—it’s up to you

Kitchens need plenty of light to be functional. It’s no surprise, then, that the color most commonly associated with them is white. Not only does white make all the elements in the kitchen more visible, but it also conveys a sense of calm, serenity, and stability—all of which are ideal for cooking and dining in peace.

If you choose it as the main color for your walls and furniture, be sure to pair it with other soft shades. The advantage is that it fits perfectly with any style you want to use in your kitchen. Plus, it contrasts beautifully with the colors of other elements in the room, such as the countertop, plants, or the aforementioned appliances.

And if you’d rather take a bit of a risk without losing that modern touch we’re looking for, you can go with black. This color always adds elegance and a certain sophistication to the overall look, with the added bonus that it also hides stains and dirt well. This way, you can use it mainly for furniture and appliances, and also pair it with other colors like white, red, or even yellow.

Kitchen with an island

Do you have a spacious kitchen? Then go for a central island that will liven it up and turn it into one of the main gathering spots in your home. By installing one, you’ll not only have everything much closer at hand and enjoy more storage space, but you’ll also make it easy and convenient for the family to eat together.

Keep in mind that it’s recommended to leave at least 90 centimeters between the island and the nearest cabinet , although 110 centimeters is actually more appropriate. And if you install the stove on the island, you’ll need to place a range hood above it. All of this will create a very modern look that will have its own personality depending on the material you choose: for example, natural stone —marble, quartz, orgranite— for the countertop will always look good, but you can also try porcelain tile.

Concealed lighting or pendant lights

Lighting will also be an important factor in the overall look of our kitchen. Arrange your cabinets to make the most of the light from your large windows, and for the evening, you can opt for a discreet lighting solution using cool-toned spotlights installed directly into the cabinets —such as pantriesorbreakfast nooks—above work areas like the stove or countertop.

Meanwhile, if you have more space and a table or island, you might consider using sleek pendant lights with warmer-toned bulbs. This will help you create two distinct areas within the same kitchen: one for preparing meals and another for enjoying them.
