Key Tips for Decorating Your Home for Three Kings’ Day

When should I do it?

The best way to decorate the house for Three Kings’ Day is to do it as a family on the morning of January 5. Naturally, the afternoon is the perfect time to enjoy the famous parades, so decorating our home in the early hours of the day will help build excitement among the little ones and get us ready for a very special afternoon and evening.

Simplicity

Unlike Christmas decorations, which are meant to stay up in our homes for several weeks, decorations for Three Kings’ Day are quite temporary. If we put them up on the 5th, we’ll most likely take them down by the 7th, when the holiday season ends.

Therefore, an important aspect of decorating your home this way is not to overcomplicate things. The idea is to highlight the elements already present in our Christmas decor and add a few motifs specific to the Three Wise Men. This will help us enhance the magic of the moment and get everything ready for the imminent arrival of their “Majesties” from the East.

Prepare the entrance for these distinguished guests

As we explained a few days ago, the front door is a very important spot for Christmas decorations. And on Three Kings Day, this should be even more evident—if that’s possible—because Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar will be coming in at some point during the night!

To do this, replace or redecorate any wreath you might have on your door, hang garlands, or even use stickers and vinyl decals featuring the silhouettes of the Three Wise Men to temporarily “spruce it up.” Anything to make it clear to them that their visit is eagerly awaited in your home.

Decorating Ideas for Three Kings' Day

Mark a path from the door to the tree

As you know, the Three Wise Men visit many homes every night. So, the easier we make it for them to get to our tree, the better.

One of our ideas for decorating the house for Three Kings’ Day is to create a path leading from the front door to the tree. You can use garlands, or even flowers and houseplants like moss and mistletoe, so that the path is clearly marked and looks very festive.

Use balloons to add a splash of color

In addition to the decorations, garlands, and plants mentioned above, you can also place balloons in strategic spots. Choose classic Christmas colors, such as red, white, gold, and green… or even get some Three Wise Men-themed balloons, since there’s a wide variety of designs: crown-shaped, star-shaped…and even shaped like the faces of our main characters!

The living room and the tree: the focal points

Another tip for decorating your home for Three Kings’ Night is to focus on the living room and, of course, the Christmas tree. This doesn’t mean you can’t put up decorations and festive motifs in other rooms, such as the children’s rooms, but it’s clear that the tree is usually placed in the “heart” of the home (the living room) and that it draws everyone’s attention, both on the night of January 5 and on the morning of January 6.

In fact, we could say that this is the “stop” where the Three Kings will arrive to bring the gifts. So we need to have everything ready to make them as comfortable as possible when they arrive: set out candy, milk, and cookies for them, as well as water and fodder for their camels; plus our shoes so they’ll know how many people live in the house and their ages. And they’re sure to take advantage of the occasion to leave a few gifts in them too!

Oh! And don’t forget to decorate the family tree a little more. You can add some decorations specific to this night, like figurines of the Three Wise Men, or add some new lights. The idea is to make it look different from the rest of the year and to create an atmosphere that makes it clear this is a special time of year!

Let the fire help you create a magical atmosphere

This time, use candlelight or the glow from a fireplace to light the main rooms in your home. You can take advantage of this softer, warmer light to enjoy a family dinner, as it will create a very special and comforting atmosphere on Three Kings’ Day.

That said, do take every precaution and don’t forget to blow out the candles or extinguish the fire in the fireplace before going to sleep. Always use them responsibly—the lights on the Christmas tree should be enough to help the Three Wise Men find their way without any trouble and know where to leave their gifts.

Make sure the footprints of Their Majesties and the camels are clearly visible

A great way to build up the excitement for the little ones when they wake up on the morning of January 6 is to let them see the footprints left on the floor of your home by the Three Wise Men and their camels. You can make them yourself quite easily, because all you’ll need is a template, some white cardstock, a pair of scissors, and flour or baking soda to fill in the footprints. Or you can simply buy them as stickers to place them at the entrance and along the hallway leading to the living room.

Present the gifts appropriately

After all that effort decorating the house for Three Kings’ Day, don’t neglect the presentation of the gifts. Use Christmas boxes and label them so that when it’s time to open them, everyone will know who they’re for. And try to be creative when placing them next to the tree: you can build a pyramid with them, arrange them strategically, or even hide the smaller ones among the tree’s ornaments and branches—the kids will be thrilled to search for and find them!

And let’s not forget the Christmas carols

Finally, complement your home decorations for Three Kings’ Night with music that’s perfect for the occasion. There are plenty of Christmas carols that are ideal for listening to and singing on the night of January 5, so don’t forget to put together a short playlist ahead of time to liven up the atmosphere while you wait for Their Majesties.
