Today, the use of solar panels in homes is more than just a reality. The environmental impact or the ecological footprint we have been generating over the past few decades has pushed us to seek solutions. And one of the most important involves installing solar panels at home.
So, at Culmia, we want to spark a discussion about the cost-effectiveness of installing solar panels at home. Keep reading to learn all the details!
Initial investment
It has now been four years since the repeal of the so-called “sun tax,” which later led to Royal Decree-Law 15/2018, dated October 5, on urgent measures for the energy transition and consumer protection. The final installation costs, as well as energy demand and savings on the electricity bill, are some of the factors to consider before venturing into the complex world of solar panels for residential use.
It is clear that the final price anyone wishing to install solar panels on their home will pay is quite high. As for the installation, it can be done on one’s own or, if the customer prefers, by hiring a specialized company.
Initially, the average cost of installing solar panels is around 1,500 euros per kilowatt of power. In addition, it’s important to note that the average power consumption of Spanish households is 4.4 kW, so the initial cost would amount to an average of 6,500 euros. On top of all these initial costs, there is the option of installing a battery to store the electricity generated. Thus, the total initial costs clearly represent a significant financial investment.
Therefore, the payback period for this initial investment should be calculated over a period of time that spans several years. This will ensure that the solar panels are economically viable.
Is it cost-effective to live in places with little sunlight?
It is indisputable that areas with more daily sunlight are, in principle, more profitable than those where sunlight is scarcer. However, today it is a fact that countries with less sunlight, such as Austria and Germany, have a larger total area of solar panels than regions where the sun shines more frequently.
Spain is a country with abundant daily sunshine, ranking among the top European countries in terms of daily hours of sunshine. Furthermore, it is well known that areas in northern Spain do not receive as many hours of sunlight per day as provinces bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, the fewer hours of sunlight an area receives per day, the higher the investment cost for solar panels will be, since more powerful equipment will be required.
Added Value and Savings on Your Electricity Bill
Another key factor regarding the use of solar panels is the added value they bring to a home . Although installing solar panels in a home may initially seem like a financial loss, it’s important to understand that this is a long-term investment. Therefore, anyone planning to sell their home should know that the final sale price will be higher thanks to the use of solar panels.
In general, using cost-effective solar panels will help reduce dependence on the grid and save on electricity bills. In fact, more and more households are deciding to install solar panels, whether because of the reduced bureaucratic hurdles that currently exist or because of their increasingly attractive and competitive prices.
Given that these solar panels generally have a lifespan of 20 years, they are indeed a good investment for the future at this time.
