Breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack, or dinner… These moments are especially important, particularly when we enjoy them with our families. So having a space set aside for this purpose—no matter how small—allows us to eat in complete comfort and peace. That’s why many homes have their own dining room—either as a separate room or as part of a larger space, such as the living room or the kitchen.

In any case, given its very specific purpose, we usually don’t need much space to create a cozy setting where we can enjoy our meals. That’s why today at Culmia we’re going to share some tips on how to stylishly organize a small dining room. Are you ready to discover them?

How to Style a Small Dining Room: Tips

Space Planning

First, we need to consider two factors. On the one hand, the number of people who will typically use the dining area at the same time—that is, who we want to eat there. And, on the other hand, the space we have available, especially if, as we’ve mentioned, this area will be integrated into a larger room.

Depending on these factors, we’ll have more or less leeway when making our decisions, although functionality and practicality will always be essential for stylishly organizing a small dining room. In this case, each person should have enough space to eat comfortably; therefore, we should always prioritize the comfort of the furniture over its aesthetics.

The table and chairs—the center of the “universe” that makes up the dining room

As we’ve said, the purpose of a dining room is to provide a specific space where one or more people can eat comfortably. So the essential furniture includes both the table and the chairs that will serve that purpose. In this case, since we don’t have much space, the key is to choose furniture that’s unobtrusive, light, and compact, so that, as a whole, it doesn’t take up more space than we need.

When choosing a table, we should keep in mind that round tables tend to make the best use of space; however, we can also opt for a rectangular one if it fits well with our space. In fact, a very practical solution for making the most of your dining room is to choose a folding or extendable table, since this will allow you to expand it whenever you need to use it and keep it folded away the rest of the time.

As for chairs, you need to strike a balance between comfort and size. Keep in mind that the dining room isn’t a place meant for spending a lot of time each day, but rather for the time it takes to eat lunch or dinner. That’s why we can focus especially on choosing small chairs that are easy to put away and take up minimal space. For example, stools, benches, or poufs, because they don’t have backs and, in some cases, can even be stored under the table itself.

Lighting: Prioritize Natural Light

Good visibility is especially important in the dining room, so you can handle your utensils and eat without any problems. So, when deciding where to place it, consider where sunlight enters the room and try to make the most of it—without compromising the rest of the room, if the dining area is part of the living room or kitchen.

What do we mean by this? For example, if you have a terrace or balcony, make sure your dining room furniture doesn’t block the way or block the light coming in from outside. Ideally, a small dining area should be arranged in such a way that it makes the most of the natural light without restricting or affecting the rest of the room.

Also, for the evening hours, make sure you have an artificial lighting solution that ensures good visibility during dinner. Here, it’s best to avoid placing the light source on the table itself, so as not to take up space. Instead, you can opt for a lamp or wall sconce mounted on the ceiling above the table, so that the light shines evenly over the entire available space and ensures good visibility.

Ideas for Organizing a Small Dining Room

Storage bench: a perfect 2-in-1 for the dining room

Going back to what I mentioned earlier about furniture, you might want to consider buying one or two storage benches to organize your small dining room in style. These days, they pair very well with chairs, creating an eye-catching and practical combination—not only do they take up very little space, but they also provide extra storage for all sorts of things.

This makes them especially appealing if you want to make the most of a corner of your living room or kitchen to set up a small dining area with style. Benches fit perfectly into L-shaped layouts, allowing you to maximize the space and create a dining area even where it seems there’s no room at all.

Visually distinguishing spaces

If your small dining area is located within a larger room, try to physically and visually separate each of the areas. It probably won’t be too difficult, because fortunately, there are several interesting options available to help you achieve this.

First of all, the furniture itself can help, because you can choose different styles and finishes for the living room and dining room. You can also opt for different colors—for example, by painting the dining room wall in a distinctive way to make it look like a separate room. Or you can opt for a physical division by arranging the furniture, using plants, or installing room dividers. This last option is particularly interesting if you want to achieve an attractive decorative effect.

Small, Decorated Dining Room

Mirrors: A Great Friend to Small Dining Rooms

Of course, we can’t leave out one of the most common tips for creating the illusion of more space. Mirrors and glass surfaces are synonymous with elegance and depth, so you can use them to your advantage when styling your small dining room.

To do this, you can cover an entire wall with a mirror, because it’s usually better to install one large mirror than several small ones. And try to position it strategically so that it catches natural light and creates an eye-catching reflection.

Enhance the style of your small dining room with an eye-catching rug

Consider covering the floor of your dining room with an eye-catching rug that complements the style you’ve created. When choosing one, keep in mind that it should be larger than the table and chairs combined, even when they’re pushed back. And it’s important that it be easy to clean and maintain, since this is one of the areas of the house most prone to getting dirty.

It’s important to keep the fabric short so it doesn’t get in the way when moving chairs or stools. And you can change the style depending on the time of year, choosing a warm, cozy fabric in winter and a cool, natural one in summer.

And what about the decorative style? Rugs are always a great way to create contrast with the surroundings, so you can choose a dark shade if the walls and furniture are light, or vice versa. They also leave room for bold choices: if you want to take a risk, you can opt for geometric patterns, wide stripes, and eye-catching, mottled colors, as these options have recently become a trend in many living rooms and dining rooms.
