8 Tips for Saving on Household Expenses
Calculate your current expenses and create a budget
The first step toward saving on household expenses in 2024 is to have a clear understanding of our accounts and our financial situation. Writing down all our recurring expenses (for paying bills, buying groceries, and purchasing goods and services) and setting aside an amount for unexpected expenses (for repairs, one-time purchases, etc.) will allow us to create a very useful budget.
By putting it down on a sheet of paper or in a document, we’ll easily see where our money goes each month. And this way, we’ll have a much clearer idea of where we can cut back to end up saving money. Essentially, because we’ll be able to develop a strategy to minimize expenses as much as possible—or even eliminate them—if, after a dispassionate analysis, we realize they’re unnecessary or not worth the cost.
Set a savings goal
With your budget in hand, decide exactly how much you want to save on household expenses in 2024. Try to set a realistic goal that you can actually achieve, because if you set the bar too high, you may end up feeling frustrated if, in the long run, you realize you can’t reach your goal because it’s too difficult.
Consider switching your electricity or gas plan
As you know, electricity and gas bills are among the household’s fixed expenses. However, it’s important to keep in mind that we aren’t locked into the rates we’ve signed up for and that we can consider switching to options that might be more cost-effective for us at any given time.
When it comes to electricity bills , each provider has its own offers. But typically, the market offers flat-rate tariffs (a single price per kilowatt-hour per day), time-of-use tariffs (charged by time periods throughout the day), and customized tariffs .
And when it comes to natural gas, there are also different plans depending on the provider. However, we can distinguish between two very distinct options. On the one hand, regulated or last-resort rates (TUR), which are regulated by the government and are specifically designed for consumers who use 50,000 kWh or less per year in their homes. And, on the other hand, there are unregulated rates, under which the supplier and the customer freely negotiate their prices.
In any case, to determine which rates are best for us , we’ll need to know our total monthly consumption, our usage patterns (such as the times or days when we use the most energy), and current market conditions. This information will help us pinpoint our needs and determine whether it’s more cost-effective for us to choose fixed or customized rates.
Consider installing a self-consumption system
Another good option for saving on household expenses in the long run—one that’s also sustainable—is to opt for a self-consumption system. In this regard, the most common and cost-effective option is usually solar energy. It is estimated that installing photovoltaic panels on homes can result in savings of up to 70% on electricity bills, depending on the property’s geographic location and the elevation at which the system is installed.
And the benefits don’t end there, because some companies allow you to offset excess consumption generated by these types of systems. What does this mean? It means that if, in a given month, we generate more electricity than we need, we can feed that surplus back into the power grid, and the company will then apply an equivalent discount to our bill. So, it’s a great way to save money while helping the planet!

Open a savings account or set aside some money
You can save money not only by cutting back on your regular expenses. You can also do so proactively by setting aside a specific amount of money each week or month. The simplest and most visual way to do this is with a traditional piggy bank, but you might also consider opening a savings account if, in addition to building up reserves, you want it to generate returns for you in the medium and long term.
A bank savings plan will allow you to assess the risks of investing your money, as well as access it immediately if you need it at any given time. Keep in mind, however, that these plans may also include service fees, so before signing up, you should weigh the pros and cons to decide whether it’s more beneficial for you to save on your own or with the bank’s help.
Optimize your shopping list and compare prices
For convenience, you probably buy all your most commonly used household items at the same store or supermarket. But this might not be the smartest choice financially, because you can often find those same products for a little less at another nearby store.
Our tip for saving on household expenses is to make a standard list of the products you buy each month and do a quick comparison of their prices at local stores in your neighborhood. This way, you’ll be able to see where each item is cheapest and better plan your shopping so that it’s as convenient and economical as possible.
And, along with that, try to shop wisely. Avoid buying things on impulse and stick to what you know you need and will actually use. It’ll probably be easier if, before making your shopping list, you check your pantry and fridge to see what you have and what you need—and if you freeze anything you won’t be eating right away.
Follow the 3 “R” rule
Reduce, recycle, and reuse. In other words, limit your consumption to what you really need, and find new uses for—or reuse as often as possible—those products and items that allow for it. For example, if you like DIY (Do It Yourself), you can repurpose cardboard boxes, old clothes, or old furniture to make crafts that are useful in your daily life. Or you can reuse the water you use to boil food to water your plants, use both sides of a sheet of paper, use old toothbrushes for household cleaning, and so on.
Develop financial habits
New year, new life. Or new habits—because, as we mentioned at the beginning, every time we turn the page on the calendar, we can consider making some significant changes in our lives. And, in doing so, help us save money at home.
There are plenty of money-saving habits you can adopt if you haven’t already:
- Replace our bathtub with a shower stall, because it will allow us to save a huge amount of water.
- Adjust our HVAC systems to an ideal temperature depending on the time of year: between 24 and 26°C in the summer and between 20 and 22°C in the winter.
- Use appliances during off-peak hours if you’re on a regulated electricity rate.
- Don’t leave appliances on standby if we’re not using them.
- Avoid letting the water run while we’re brushing our teeth or washing our hair.
- Cancel subscriptions to services we’re not using.
- Turn off the lights when leaving each room or when we don’t need them.
- Turn off the heat 2 to 5 minutes before a dish is finished cooking to take advantage of the residual heat.
