However, this brief four-month respite encourages us to be cautious and save as much as possible to prepare for what lies ahead: another summer in which our goal will likely be to enjoy a well-deserved and unforgettable vacation.
That’s why, at CULMIA, we’ve put together some tips to help you balance your budget over the next few weeks and strengthen your finances ahead of the summer. We hope you find them very useful!

How to Save as Much as Possible at Home This Spring
Set a budget for expenses
To set realistic savings goals, you need to have a good understanding of your current financial situation. Keep track of your income and analyze your expenses over the past few months so you can identify the best areas to cut back and save money.
With this goal in mind, you might find it helpful to use the well-known“50/30/20 Rule.” It involves allocating 50% of your monthly income to basic needs (mortgage, groceries, utilities, clothing, etc.), 30% to secondary expenses (services such as phone and Internet, subscriptions, entertainment, etc.), and 20% to savings.
So try not to spend more than 80% of your monthly income, and if you can, even cut back a little on your discretionary spending.
Revamp your wardrobe and buy only what you need
Don’t let the first few weeks of spring go by without updating your wardrobe. Swap out your winter clothes for spring ones, and take advantage of this transition to do some cleaning. This means throwing away or getting rid of any clothes you won’t be wearing anymore, as well as making a note of everything you think you’ll need in the coming weeks.
If you do this, you’ll be able to focus on buying only what’s missing from your wardrobe and avoid making the mistake of buying clothes that are similar to what you already have or that you don’t really need.

Take the opportunity to exercise outdoors
If you don’t follow a very demanding exercise plan to stay in shape, or if your routines don’t include the use of equipment, you can cancel or pause your gym membership and opt for outdoor sports instead: running, biking, or playing sports is much easier between March and June. In fact, it’s the best time of year to exercise outdoors, so it’s the perfect time to stay active while saving as much as possible at home.
And if you don’t exercise regularly but have no trouble walking, you can also save a few euros. All you have to do is choose to walk instead of taking the car or public transportation for short distances, such as going to your neighborhood health clinic or visiting a friend who lives 20 minutes from your home.
Check the electricity rate plan you’re on
Keep in mind that during the spring and summer , energy prices tend to be lower than in the fall and winter. So use this information to your advantage—to save as much as possible at home, you can choose the electricity rate that best fits your expected usage over the next few months.
Since there are more hours of natural light (especially once daylight saving time has been implemented) and you won’t need to use the heat on most spring days, you may find it more cost-effective to choose a PVPC rate from the regulated market that offers time-of-use pricing: so that, for example, electricity is cheaper precisely when you’re most likely to use it—at night.
To help you make this decision, the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) website offers an online tool that allows you to compare natural gas and electricity plans based on basic information about your household, such as your power rating and consumption.

Use energy efficiently and wisely
Just because your energy bill is much lower in the spring than in the winter doesn’t mean you should let your guard down and stop taking steps to save as much as possible at home.
For example, if you have an air conditioner installed in your home, give it the maintenance it needs during the first few weeks of spring: clean its components (the filter, the split unit, and the outdoor unit), visually inspect the system, and test it to make sure everything is working properly. Or, if you’d rather not go through the trouble, call a professional to do it for you.
Also, open windows and ventilate your home often if it’s warmer inside than outside; take advantage of sunlight to warm the rooms in your home; take shorter showers; wash with cold water; or replace your traditional light bulbs with LED ones.

A Commitment to Electricity Self-Consumption
At first glance, this option may seem expensive. But it’s perfect for people who are forward-thinking and patient enough to see a return on their investments in the medium and long term. Self-consumption is an ideal way to maximize savings at home, since in some cases it can reduce up to 70% on your electricity bill, depending on the type of system installed and the rate plan you have.
Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that this solution has some barriers to entry, such as the need for space to install the solar panels or the cost of the process. But, as we’ve said, it’s a nearly guaranteed success, because it pays for itself quickly and, furthermore, benefits from government and institutional subsidies designed to encourage self-consumption and the storage of this type of energy.
Compare prices at different supermarkets
During the colder months, it might not be worth traveling far to save a little money on your grocery shopping. With the cold weather, convenience is key, so it makes sense to fill up your cart at stores and supermarkets near your home.
However, this situation changes starting in the spring, because temperatures are much more pleasant and it no longer takes as much effort to visit other stores to find the best prices.
So, another great way to save as much as possible at home this spring is to to compare prices on everyday items at the different stores in your area. Then plan your shopping trips based on those prices, creating specific lists for each store. This will let you save a few euros every week—which, by the end of the month, your wallet might really appreciate.
Plan Your Meals
Another tip that can help you save as much as possible at home this spring is to plan your meals carefully. If you think ahead about what you’re going to eat over the next week, you’ll be able to tailor your grocery shopping much better to your needs.
In addition, if you eat out during the week because of your job, try to bring your lunch from home. Going to a restaurant is much more convenient and faster, but at the same time, it can really hurt your budget. That’s why bringing a packed lunch is , by far, a much more cost-effective option for those looking to save money.
