Things to Consider Before You Begin
If you decide to tidy up your home and are starting from a state of obvious clutter, keep a few things in mind. The first is that you’re taking on a task that will require you to devote time to it, because you usually won’t be able to finish it in the blink of an eye. The size of your home and its initial state of clutter will determine how much effort you’ll need to put in, as well as the help you might need.
Second, it’s a good idea for the intention to tidy up to be accompanied by a willingness to keep things tidy afterward. Think about it: if you’re making this effort to arrange everything the way you want it, it’s so that it stays that way in the future. It really doesn’t make much sense to tidy up now only to let everything get messy again in a few days—that would have been a wasted effort.
And finally, accept that you’ll have to throw things away and clean up. Getting organized is much easier if we get rid of items we don’t use or need—not to mention that, unless you have a very large home, you probably don’t have enoughspace to store everything that’s out of place and causing the clutter you want to get rid of.
8 Tips for Organizing a Cluttered Home
1. Plan how to organize your home (and get the whole family involved)
To start with, you’ll need to get a sense of the situation and set up a work plan. Don’t try to get everything organized in a single day, especially if things are a bit chaotic to begin with. Take it easy and take breaks every so often if you’re going to spend entire mornings or afternoons on this.
To stay organized, you can tackle one room at a time. One day for the living room, another for one of the bedrooms, and so on. And if you live with other people, try to get them involved in this process as well, because it’s very important that they understand the importance of creating order in the home and maintaining it afterward.
2. Keep only the items you really need
You might find it hard to throw away certain items that have sentimental value to you but that you don’t use. Or this might even happen with items that don’t have any emotional attachment at all—either because you don’t have time to declutter or simply because you tend to hoard things. Well, when we set out to organize our home, we need to be willing to get rid of what we don’t need.
The fewer things you have to organize, the easier it will be to get everything done—and the easier it will be to keep everything organized afterward. Keep this in mind and take this opportunity to take the plunge and let go of everything that adds absolutely nothing to your life.

3. A place for everything and everything in its place
The secret to keeping your home organized is assigning a specific place to every object and piece of furniture. If we know where everything belongs, we can find it quickly and easily—and put it back there when we’re done using it. This is crucial for maintaining long-term order so we don’t have to reorganize everything every few weeks or months.
4. Use functional furniture with storage compartments
Keeping things tidy also means storing some items out of sight, because the more things that are visible, the more cluttered the room will look and the greater the sense of disorder it will convey. To address this issue, using functional furniture (such as cabinets, tables, storage benches, etc.) can help, as it allows us to save space while also adding a decorative touch to the room.

5. Clear off the surfaces you use regularly
The living room table, the kitchen countertop, or the hallway cabinet. These are three examples of surfaces that are useful for carrying out everyday tasks and that, if we clutter them with unrelated objects, will cause us inconvenience. Either because we’ll have to clean them before we can use them, or because they’ll force us to do what we want somewhere else.
In fact, they can even trigger a domino effect that causes even more chaos. For example, if we clutter the surface of the entryway cabinet, when we get home we won’t be able to use it to set down our keys, wallet, purse, etc. As a result, the cabinet won’t serve its purpose, and we’ll end up having to put all these items somewhere else—which also means breaking the aforementioned rule of “a place for everything and everything in its place.”
6. Put every item you take out of its place back where it belongs when you’re done
As we’ve already pointed out, if we know where everything goes, it will be easy to keep things organized. All we have to do is put things away or store them when we’re done using them.
This is something that can be hard for us to internalize out of convenience, because we might be tempted to leave the book we just finished reading on a table since we don’t feel like getting up off the couch. But it is precisely these small mistakes that, when they add up, eventually lead to clutter taking over our home.
7. For every thing that comes in, another must go out
You may be very pleased with how organized your home has become. But if, from that point on, you keep buying new things and don’t have enough space to store them properly, you’ll most likely have no choice but to leave them on a table or in a corner—or find a temporary spot for them where they don’t quite fit.
The accumulation of random objects is often synonymous with clutter, because the space in a home isn’t infinite. So, to prevent this from becoming a problem, we can set a simple rule: for every item that comes into our home, another must go to make room for it. Naturally, this will require us to make constant decisions, but in return, it will ensure that our home is always tidy.
8. Spend 10 minutes a day keeping things tidy
While we’re at home, we can’t do everything while always keeping tidiness in mind. Sometimes we’re in a hurry, focused on other tasks, or need to temporarily put something out of place so we can use it again shortly afterward. So we can be flexible enough to temporarily break the rules we’ve mentioned.
The key is to commit to spending 10 or 15 minutes at the end of the day going through our home room by room, with the goal of tidying up everything we’ve left out of place during the day.
For example, we may tend to leave the kitchen a mess at night with the intention of cleaning it up the next morning, but if we do this, we might not get around to it the next day due to a lack of time. This is dangerous, because if we make this mistake, we’ll have already taken the first step toward letting chaos gain ground again.
